On March 19, 2025, KUCOEngage Episode 3 brought together professionals from across the globe, including representatives from The International Academy of Physician Associate Educators (IAPAE) and The Global Association of Clinical Officers and Physician Associates (GACOPA), to discuss the critical need for harmonizing clinical practitioner titles and curricula.
Key Discussion Points:
Harmonization of Titles: Currently, over 30 different titles are used worldwide for similar medical professions. A key proposal is to adopt a universal term, “clinical practitioner,” with country-specific titles listed as subgroups. The present organizations are all involved in this effort, aiming for global standardization by 2028.
Global Curriculum Framework: IAPAE is working to create a global curriculum framework for Physician Associates (PAs) based on international evidence and WHO global competencies. This framework would establish minimum requirements for a bachelor’s level entry, including total hours, didactic hours, and clinical hours, to facilitate international recognition.
Challenges in Curriculum Harmonization: Discussions highlighted discrepancies in academic and clinical hours reported on transcripts, even within the same institution. Inconsistencies affect the registration process and global recognition of qualifications
East African Curriculum Harmonization: Ongoing efforts in East Africa aim to harmonize curricula for clinical officers to facilitate cross-border practice.
International Recognition: Several countries currently accept internationally trained PAs, including the United Kingdom, Israel, among others. The meeting also addressed opportunities and challenges for clinical officers seeking international recognition and work opportunities.
This meeting was a significant step towards achieving global standards and recognition for clinical practitioners.
